Reading about Goering and Hess in their lead up to their trials for war crimes. It’s interesting to get an account of their personality / neurotic natures. I wonder how true the accounts are.
Hess was apparently into astrology / sooth saying, and was described to have been schizophrenic with periodic amnesias. Psychosomatic symptoms plagued his body while his mind slowly broke over the attempt to cope with being largely responsible for some of those horrors.
Goering is presented as an opiate addict and social chameleon whose insanity seemed to rise at pace with his power during the German turn towards Nazism.
I’m morbidly curious about how they were affected by the stress of being responsible for such monumental atrocities. What must that feel like, to be crushed under the weight of global Justice?
I never want to know, but I do want to learn and read different perspectives.
Book is Justice at Nuremberg by Robert E. Conot.
